Data Centers for AI

How the Rise of Artificial Intelligence is Reshaping the Data Center Industry

AI data centers look different from the ones that came before. Artificial intelligence workloads change what a facility must deliver on space, power and cooling. Artificial intelligence is reshaping society. It is also reshaping the machines and the companies that power it. Rapid advances in AI are driving demand for new digital services that can harness it properly.  Improving the products already in our daily lives will be core to the future of AI.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

The phrase artificial intelligence dates from the 1950s. Early computation research was exploring simple automation and problem-solving. That research taught scientists how to train computers to mimic human reasoning. It is how machines became the smart companions we use today.

Continued research shows up in the automation and reasoning now built into our phones, computers and machines. AI, in some form, is becoming a background fact of our world.

Three Ways AI Data Centers Are Changing

Artificial intelligence has already changed more than one article can cover. But three changes stand out. Each one reshapes the data centers that are responsible for powering much of the world’s business and commerce.

First, AI-based applications are driving demand for data center space. With clients moving their businesses forward with artificial intelligence based applications, enterprises require more space than ever before. Many companies need more service support to keep applications running, and update and backup solutions eat space too. Data centers are having to redefine their business models and plans to accommodate the needs of their clients.

Second, and possibly most important, large AI applications change how high-density racks are powered and cooled. So operators have to re-evaluate design and setup to offer the space and machines clients will need.

Third, AI can now perform some of the operating tasks of a modern data center. As AI does more, it will not just reshape today’s data centers. It will increasingly run them.

As research improves, AI data centers will drive the changes, since they supply the space and the power.
