Information regarding ICMP Deprioritization

Internet Facing routers have a Limit on how much ICMP they will allow from the Routing Fabric to the control Plane.

Important things to note:

When you ping (ICMP) a router, it punts that packet for a response from the Control Plane.

When passing through a router, packets are not pushed to the Control Plane unless the destination is unknown. Given said information, an MTR is good to see where the packet loss starts, builds up, and NEVER reaches back to 0.00. When you see it go from values like 0 to 3, to 0 again, then the packet made it to and from the other side with no issue.

The intermediate packets that were sent to the intermediate hops were either responded to or dropped on the Control Plane decided on the afflicted router.
